The Secret Place in My Heart

By Darlene Torday

Inside my heart in that secret place

All women keep from sight

I store my memories

Of other times before I became your wife

The days of childhood

When I lived for each day

Enjoying my family and friends

When my best friend was the girl next door

Of the times when I learned to ride my bike

Playing hide-n-seek until dark

Catching lightning bugs in a jar

Only to release them in the morning light

Their lights too dim to see

The crushes I developed

On boys and teachers alike

Of the first cautious kisses

That made my heart go pitter-patter

The first boyfriend

The first time I fell in love

The way my dreams soared along with my heart

Until it all crashed and broke my heart

Then I met you

And the dreams were more than promises

As we built a life together

Husband and wife forever we vowed

I put away my childhood dreams

The girlish love for another

But inside my secret heart

I store the memories forever
